The Science fair was a splashing success. For a memorable end to the day, Mr. Dunwoody (above) demonstrated the effects of non-Newtonian fluids for a crowd of students.

Please note the following corrections and clarifications to the May Calendar:

Thursday, May 14 was the last day for after-school activities.
Monday, May 25 will be a FULL DAY of school for students.
Thursday, May 28 there will be no school for students due to the Dragon Boat Festival. This is a new holiday that we just learned is a four-day national holiday. Students will have additional homework and online assignments on the 28th.
Friday, May 29 will be a normal school day
Entrepreneur's day has been moved from May 30 to June 6 (also due to the Dragon Boat Festival). On Entrepreneur's day, students can create a business of selling food, drinks, or homemade items, or they can run a game to earn money. Entrance fees and a percentage of profits are donated to charity.

Special thanks to the science fair organizers and the parent volunteers for helping to make this year's science fair a great learning experience for all.

Students (above) brought their science fair boards to school Friday for final preparations. The Science Fair is this Saturday from 9:30-2:00 in all classrooms. Judging begins at 10:00. School buses will pick up children one hour later than the normal time.
QISS Welcomed David Brown, Executive Director of WASC, and Andrew Watts, headmaster of TEDA International School, for a special WASC visit this week. We were congratulated on our progress and development over the past year. QISS is accredited by WASC through 2011, when we will have the next renewal visit.
Reminder to parents of current students: Please remember that tuition and fees for the 2009-2010 academic year must be paid NO LATER than June 15 in order to secure your child's place. To receive a 4,500 rmb discount, returning students should make full payment by June 5.

Parents who are still "uncertain" whether their child will return to QISS in August are requested to notify the office (8890-9802) or David Addicott <daddicott@qiss.org.cn> as soon as they know their plans for sure. The Festival of Words was a great success. Students read stories to younger students (above), made magnetic poetry, and performed a variety of plays (below). Congratulations to the speech contest and spelling bee winners! Special thanks to the Mr. Snider and the Festival planning committee and the help from the Parent Advisory Committee.

A group of middle school students are at the ACAMIS cultural convention in Tianjin this weekend.
Lower and Upper School Report cards will be sent home Friday, April 24
Parent-teacher conferences will be April 29 and 30. Students will be dismissed at 1:00. Upper school students will lead their conferences and will invite parents.
The Science Fair will be Sat. May 9
The last days for after-school activities session II will be May 12 and 14.

The QISS Model United Nations class is participating in the 3-day MUN conference at the Qingdao HaiQing Hotel from April 16-18. Five schools are involved in the conference. Good luck delegates!
The annual Festival of Words is next week. Please see the green schedule which has been sent home with students. Parents are invited to attend the opening ceremony, upper school speech contest, spelling be semi-finals and finals, and human boggle.
Book Fair: as part of the festival of words, we will have a book fair with new and used books for sale Monday-Wednesday 8:30-5:00 in room 208.
Parent conferences will be April 29 and 30 from 1:00-5:00. In the upper school, these conferences will be student-led. Students will be released at 1:00.

Grade 3 (above) Learned how shoes are made at a local factory on a field trip last week.

The 2009-2010 school Calendar will be sent home today.
Monday April 13 is a 1/2 day for staff development. Students will be sent home at 1:00.
April 20-24 is our annual Festival of Words. See the schedule sent home today on green paper.
Earth Week is also April 20-24. Information has been sent home with students regarding Earth Week Activities: Monday-Wear Green. Tuesday--Plant a Tree. Wednesday--Make Solar Ovens. Thursday--Earth hour. Friday--Paper mache.

QISS upper school students will have a "week without walls" May 18-22. There will be student trips to Wei Hai (grades 7-8), Mengshan (grades 9-10), and Beijing (grades 11-12). The trip for grade 6 is still to be determined. More information about the trips will be sent home with students next week.

Upper School Progress reports will be sent home Friday for any students having academic difficulties.
March 23-27 Spring Vacation. School will resume on Monday March 30.
The Science fair has been moved from April 4 to May 9.
Admissions Notice: QISS is now accepting admission applications for the 2009-2010 school year. Screening will take place between April 13 and May 9 and decisions will be announce by May 15. Qualified applicants with a brother or sister already enrolled at QISS will be given priority for admission, as long as the application is received by May 1.

Feb 6-9: The QISS Choir class is going to Hong Kong today to participate in a music festival.
Feb 11-15: Boys and Girls basketball tournament in Mongolia
Feb 16-17: No school for students. Teachers will be receiving training in implementing the PYP and ESL in the mainstream, and preparing for the upcoming WASC accreditation visit.
Feb 18 (Wed.): Semester 2 report cards sent home (upper school)
Feb 24: After school activities begin
April 4 (Saturday): Science Fair. All students develop a project for the science fair. More information will be sent home by teachers.

Today is our China Day Festival, we hope you can visit for student performances this afternoon.
Lower School Report cards will be sent home with students today.
Some senior students will be taking the SAT tomorrow at school. The next SAT will be offered in May
There will be no school January 26-30 for the New Year Holiday
There will be a parent meeting to discuss the new middle school and high school health program on Feb 5 at 9:00 in the music room.
The school cleaning staff have been disinfecting desks and tables to reduce the spread of germs. Please remind your children to wash hands regularly during the flu season.

Construction of the new campus is underway. A little snow and cold has not slowed down the construction crews.
